When it comes to mold in your home, it isn’t always in the most obvious places like the corner of the basement. This fungal foe could be hidden around your home in the most unexpected places. Mold and mildew need four things to start growing in your home: dark spaces, organic nutrients, a surface to take root, and moisture. With these four things, mold can be growing almost anywhere. So before you turn on your furnace for the winter, it might be a good idea to have your home tested for mold!
HVAC Systems and Ducts
While it may not be in the system itself, mold can start growing in the drainage pans of your HVAC systems. These drainage pans collect the condensation from the units. They are commonly located under the cooling coil of the unit. If your system is working properly, the condensation will drain away, but if it is malfunctioning the water can build up in the pan. This will create the perfect habitat for mold and mildew. If the air is moving too quickly through the coils, it could carry some of the moisture from the drainage pan into the ducts, also creating a haven for fungi. It is important to make sure the drainage pan is properly installed and to have your HVAC system inspected regularly.
Refrigerator Drip Pans
Just like the HVAC drain pans, refrigerator drip pans collect condensation from the cooling unit of the refrigerator. This drip pan collects water, crumbs, and is under the refrigerator. It is a great place for mold to grow.
Bath Toys
“Rubber ducky, you’re the one” who has been carrying mold in your stomach! Think about how many times your children have played with their rubber bath toys and you’d cringe to know it is a great place for mold to grow. Left in the bathroom all the time, there is plenty of moisture and it is dark inside the toy. This is a parent’s worst nightmare.
Front-Loading Washing Machines
Yes, these systems are supposed to be the best around. But if you have ever opened the door to your machine and noticed an odor, your machine probably has mold in it. The water and left over lint make it a perfect place to grow mold.
There are many different places from this fungal foe to hide in your home. It is important to catch the mold before your family starts feeling the physical symptoms of mold and before it starts spreading into other parts of your home.
