Christmas Trees May Bring Mold Into Your Home

A christmas tree

Why do christmas trees aggravate mold allergies?

While installing a beautiful live Christmas tree marks the true start of the holiday season for many Americans, the mold that tends to grow on the branches of these trees can actually trigger weeks of miserable allergies for others according to a new study.

Why Do Christmas Trees Affect Mold Allergies So Strongly?

Researchers in Connecticut have found that the mold count from a live christmas tree increases drastically in only the first two weeks after it is brought indoors. In fact, the mold count rises to five times the normal level, making this harbinger of holiday cheer a nightmare for those with mold allergies. While mold allergies often peak in the fall, theses trees cause a whole new peak over the holiday season.

How Did The Study Work?

The mold growth on a live Christmas tree was studied in a house in Connecticut. Mold reproduce by permeating the air with spores, so after the tree was brought in researchers paid close attention to mold spore counts and measured them regularly. These counts were taken a dozen times over a two week period, from December 24th to Jan 6th. However, the researchers did not look into the types of mold. They also did not assess whether or not the mold growth triggered allergic symptoms in the people that lived in the house.

The Findings of the Study

The study found that the mold spore count was 800 spores per square meter over the course of the first three days. The normal amount of spores is less than 1000 spores per square meter. However, after only day 4 the spore count rose incredibly, and by the end of the two week period a spore count that reached a maximum of 5000 spores per square meter were found in the home.

The Experts Suggest

As high levels of mold have been associated with allergic rhinitis, exacerbated asthma symptoms, increased asthma-related hospitalizations, and numerous health effects, experts recommend that those with mold sensitivity keep a Christmas tree in their home for no more than a week. For others who are sensitive, a well cleaned artificial tree may be the best option.
