Common Mold Questions Answered

Common Mold Questions

Mold can be scary and confusing when it pops up in your home. Let’s take a look at some common mold questions.

As mold remediation specialists, we are asked a lot of questions about mold and this fungi growing in residential homes. Mold can be scary if you are not asking the right questions. So let’s take a moment to answer all of your questions.

What is Mold?

While mold was once considered a part of the plant kingdom, it is now a part of its own distinct category of organisms. Fungi like mold and mildew absorb nutrients from organic matter in order to grow and survive. There are more than 100,000 different types of mold that have been identified. While mold is undesirable in your home, it can be beneficial when used in medicines.

Is Mold Making Me Sick?

There are many different symptoms of mold exposure. Some forms of mold mimic common seasonal allergies while others produce symptoms of rashes, inability to concentrate, and fatigue. Mold can also be associated with asthma. Mold exposure occurs when mold spores are inhaled, ingested, or touched.

How Can I Stop Mold from Growing?

Mold is everywhere and occurs naturally in nature. Spores float in your home every time you open a window, walk outside of your home, or when your pet comes in from being outside. But it is when mold starts originating in your home that the problem occurs. Mold thrives in humid places such as basement, crawl spaces, and poorly ventilated bathrooms. It also needs a temperature between 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The best way to prevent mold in your home is to remove humidity from the area as soon as possible.

How Do I Know if I Have Mold?

There are several different things you should look for that could be a sign or cause of mold. When looking for mold, follow your nose. If you smell an odd moist smell, there could be mold growing in the area. Mold can grow within 24-48 hours of water damage. If you have water stains, standing, water, or moist surfaces, mold can start to grow. When cleaning up water, make sure to inspect walls, carpets, window sills, drain pans, duct work, and wallboards for moisture.

While some experts tell you to use a cleaning spray on mold, this is not the most efficient or effective way to get rid of this fungal foe. The easiest way to get rid of mold in your home is to hire a mold remediation specialist like Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group.
