How Can an HVAC System Prevent Mold?

prevent mold with HVAC System

HVAC systems are not only amazing for hot summer nights, they can actually help to prevent mold!

Since their invention, forced-air heating and cooling systems have become extremely important in keeping our homes and businesses comfortable. But did you know these systems can actually work to prevent mold in your home as well? Let’s take a look at how these systems can keep your home healthy and mold-free.

How Can an HVAC System Prevent Mold?

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) are comprised of two different systems: forced heating and forced cool systems. Both of these systems work together to regulate and monitor the ebb and flow of a home’s life source: its air and temperature. If these systems are appropriately used and maintained, they allow your home to feel comfortable all year round and can actually prevent mold from growing in your home. When your system is properly maintained, it will circulate the air in your home, making it impossible for mold to settle. Your HVAC system also works to reduce the humidity in your home and to lower the risk of mold growing in your home.

Can HVAC Systems Spread Mold?

While HVAC systems do not act like a dehumidifier, they can help to prevent mold by stabilizing the moisture levels in your home. Because they do not actually take moisture out of the air, HVAC systems should not be used to combat a pre-existing mold problem. The moisture level in the air that is permitted to go through the ventilation is the same air and moisture that is already in your home. Since HVAC systems use the same air that is inside your home to cool or heat it, turning on your HVAC systems could actually be an invitation for disaster if you already have a mold problem. HVAC systems can carry mold spores from the infested room to other rooms in your home. If the mold problem is not solved immediately, your HVAC system, air ducts, and filters could be corrupted by a mold infestation, ruining your expensive system.

While it is dangerous to turn on your HVAC system if there is mold in your home, these systems can also be useful in preventing mold. For more information on preventing mold or stopping your mold problem, call Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group today!
