Top 3 Facts About Mold

Fact About Mold

Let’s take a look at some facts you should know about mold.

How many times have you wondered about mold growing in your home? Well, before you hire a mold remediation company like Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group, there are some things you should know about mold. Let’s take a look at our top three facts about mold.

Fact About Mold 1: Mold Needs Less Than Two Days to Grow

While not all mold infestations spring up overnight, mold can begin to grow in your home in less than two days. Mold requires three ingredients to grow: food, the ideal temperature between 50 and 80 degrees, and moisture. With all three of these ingredients, mold can begin to grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours.

Fact About Mold 2: There are Three Types of Mold

There are actually three distinct types of mold: allergenic, pathogenic, and toxigenic. Allergenic molds are usually not life-threatening but are one of the most problematic molds. These molds tend to be the most problematic for people with allergies and asthma. Pathogenic molds can become a problem for people with immune systems that are weak or compromised. This mold can cause an infection called hypersensitivity pneumonitis that resembles bacterial pneumonia. Toxigenic mold produces mycotoxins that make everyone in your home sick and can even cause immune suppression and cancer.

Fact About Mold 3: There are Five Distinct Mold Species

There are five most prevalent species of mold including Alternaria, aspergillus, cladosporium, penicillium, and stachybotrys. These molds each have their own side effects and represent the different types of mold. Alternaria mold is commonly found in your nose, mouth, and upper respiratory tract and can cause allergic responses like sneezing and coughing. Aspergillus is usually found in warm, damp climates, and is a common occupant of household dust. This mold produces mycotoxins that are a poisonous chemical compound that can cause a variety of lung infections. Cladosporium is very common outdoors but can work its way inside. It often grows on textiles, wood, and other porous materials. It also triggers hay fever and asthma symptoms. Penicillium is commonly found on wallpaper, decaying fabrics, and fiberglass duct insulation. It is known to cause allergies, asthma, and some species can release mycotoxins. Stachybotrys is extremely toxic and referred to as “black mold.” This mold produced mycotoxins and can cause serious breathing problems and even bleeding lungs.
