Ways You Could Be Helping Mold to Grow

Helping Mold to Grow

Window condensation could mean your home is full of humidity.

For most people, the mere mention of mold is enough to send them into a panic. But did you know there are some things you could be doing that could be helping the mold to grow in your home? Read on to find out how to how to change it!

Forgetting to Ventilate the Bathroom

If you love nothing better than a hot shower on a cold night, then this could be encouraging mold to grow. Having an unventilated bathroom can cause humidity to build up, which allows mold to grow in the space. To help relieve some of this humidity, open a window or door or install a ventilation fan to keep steam from lingering.

Not Using Exhaust Fans in the Kitchen

When you cook a mean or run the dishwasher, moisture and smoke can build up in the air around your home. When you forget to use an exhaust fan or use one that doesn’t work properly, you’re allowing mold to feed on the moisture in the kitchen.

Ignoring Condensation on Windows

During the winter and spring, you may notice condensation building up on the windows around your home. This could be an indicator that the moisture inside your home is higher than it should be. To help condensation form building, use a dehumidifier to help get rid of some of that moisture.

Turning off the Heat

Completely turning off your heat can actually lead to mold growth. While many people do this to keep their heating bill lower, leaving the heater off when you’re away can actually cause condensation to form inside of your walls. This condensation can lead to mold growing inside the insulation. Keep the heat at a low temperature and on an automated setting can help ward off any potential condensation while you are away.

Postponing Plumbing Problems

Just like anything else in your home, postponing plumbing repairs can trouble in more than one area. A cracked pipe or a leak could not only mean water damage but mold as well. In as little as 24 hours, your plumbing problems could turn into a mold problem behind your toilet, on the wall, or under your sinks. But fixing these problems right away could mean less of a headache for you and your home.

Ignoring Your Chores

One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to mold is to put off their chores. No one wants to spend time cleaning and it seems like the bathroom is always on the bottom of the list. But putting off your chores could mean disaster has time to strike. Mold can take advantage of those dusty corners and leave your home with more than just a little dust. Make sure to clean your bathroom regularly to avoid mold settling in.

There are many different things you could be doing that can encourage mold to settle and grow around your home. For more information on preventing mold growth or removing mold from your home, call Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group!
